DEBUT: Saboten 2023
Thoughts: Saw her one day on Twitter and was instantly reminded how I hated her as a kid. Yet… she was easy and I really enjoy doing characters that are brief or minor. Plus I needed a small project to get rid of some gold fabric and something I could do quickly anyway.
info
The first version of the costume was made for me. Literally. No leaving the house because there was no system under it to hold myself in place. The cuts in the dress were deep and made for accuracy. In the real world, she would never, ever work. So many boob spills and accidental flashes. The pattern was freehand as were the sash details--painstakingly over the entire course of Doctor Strange. All of it was just ironed on for quickness so the sash is pretty delicate when taking it on and off.

To my surprise, a lot of people actually asked to photograph her. I kept saying no, no, no, but I caved and made a second version that can be worn at a con. The pattern was freehanded again but the cut was shorter and the skirt was longer.

unfinished black dress on a table, the hem of the collar is held down by numerous colorful small clips
The first part of the dress was a simple flat front/back pattern I drafted up really fast. I wanted hem at the top to look seamless so in V1, I ended up using a glue on it. I don't remember what type but once it was dried, it was fine and held up well.

numerous geometric shapes uncut on already ironed material
I played TETRIS for the patterns. I had some left over gold fabric for the shapes. I painstakingly drew out probably more than a dozen shapes on heat n bond, cut them all out by hand then cut out more if they weren't lying the way I exactly wanted them to.

shiny gold details in the geometric shapes against a dull gold sash being prepped for ironing
Laying them all down allowed me to figure out if I needed more shapes or not. I was only covering the front part but I cheated and covered the back part (I think) of the ends if they ever turned and showed on camera. The belt is hand tied so the shapes are still delicate but hold up well.

V1 test fit. The gloves, choker and leggings were made on the fly. Because I had this groundwork, for V2, all I did was re-do the dress to make it more structured. Yet even with the structure, I still have to be taped in :')
